Shantha began as an R&D outfit at the Osmania University under the industry-university interactive program in 1993 and later at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) until an independent R&D facility was built. In 1997, Shantha became the first Indian company to market a recombinant human healthcare product, by solely developing and commercializing vaccine r-DNA Hepatitis-B. Merieux Alliance group, based in France had acquired majority stake in Shantha Biotechnics Private Limited (Shantha) in November, 2006.
Shantha was acquired by Sanofi in July, 2009. Sanofi-aventis, a leading global pharmaceutical company, discovers, develops and distributes therapeutic solutions to improve the quality of life for the public at large.
Shantha is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sanofi group.
